For my second work sample, I chose an essay we did for English class. The essay was on a book we read: The Hate U Give. We had to choose two main ideas to focus our eight paragraph essay on. I chose: how the book relates to the real world, and the themes of the book. I chose to share this project because this essay was challenging for me. I’m usually very confident in my ability to write essays; however, I’ve never had to write an eight paragraph essay. The essay took a lot of planning and research. It’s a project that I really cared about this quarter, so I thought it was fitting to include in my portfolio. I believe that Self-Direction Skills best describe what skills I used to write this essay. I planned out the paragraphs, did specific research, and found details in the book. I completed the essay on time and independently.
It was challenging for me to plan out eight paragraphs that all fit together around two themes. This is simply because I have never had to plan out an eight paragraph essay; I either wrote a shorter essay, written more than I had planned to, or have written a story. I am happy with this essay. I did a good job, and I can’t think of much to improve on. |
