For my junior project, I decided to tutor Ms. Provance's Algebra I students. Every Thursday during periods 4 and 5, I helped the students develop basic algebra skills such as: combining like terms, basic operations with negative numbers, graphing, absolute value, and more. There are four Algebra I classes and given that I don't have four free periods, I worked with another student, Kaitlin, to make sure all the Algebra I classes were treated the same. I'm most proud of my students.
When I first started working with them, almost everyone refused help, and I had to figure out what questions to ask them to get the students to admit they didn't understand a concept. By the end of the project, most of the students were willing to work with me and actively asked for help. They've all shown great improvement in their math skills. I was initially unsure what my junior project would be, and the Algebra I teacher, Ms. Provance, was gone most of first quarter. This made my task much more difficult, but I persevered, used my interpersonal skills, and am proud of my final product. Given the chance to redo my junior project, I can't think of anything notable to do differently. My students improved greatly and Ms. Provance has spoken about how much of an impact I made in her classroom. That being said, I am excited to continue tutoring and perhaps do so for my senior project. |
