Name of Assignment: First Major Revision
Subject: English 100 Facilitator/Teacher: Prof. Andaluz Description of Work/Assignment: For this assignment, I revised an essay I had previously written in the course. I was given (and gave) peer feedback, and also got advice from my professor on what to improve upon. Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I feel that the 21st Century Skill I used the most was: Communication. A large part of revising the essay was making it more concise and appealing to the audience. It’s difficult to communicate a point if your writing is unreadable. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I’m really proud that I, personally, am proud of this project. Most school assignments are mediocre; I don’t have them, but I don’t love them. I definitely don’t look at most of them with pride. I enjoyed this project and felt proud of what I made, and that’s rare for me. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? This revision project helped me realize how to improve upon communicating information; I was able to improve upon word choice, narration, and grammar. I now feel quite a bit more confident in my writing. What was most difficult about completing this task? It’s difficult to edit essays because I’m often tempted to keep things the way they are, and I’m not always sure what needs to be changed as well as how to change it. I spent at least thirty minutes trying to think of a synonym for sky because I had used the word twice in a paragraph. (Yes, I looked it up, and yes, it still took me another twenty minutes to figure out how not to say “sky”. I ended up with “the ocean above”.) How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? Honestly, I could probably improve my revision, but that’s not the point of revising. I edited with the feedback I was given, and made sure the essay didn’t have grammatical errors. If anything needs to be changed, I’ll change it in my final draft. How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? Well, it’s an essay, and I’ve written quite a few of those. In all seriousness, it’s quite different from what I”ve previously learned. I’m not used to being able to swear in my essays. I’m not used to peer feedback. I’m not used to revising essays. I suppose it relates to what I’ve learned in previous English classes, but adds onto the knowledge. How can you apply this to future learning? I can apply this to all of my school projects that require writing; I’m going to be using this knowledge for a while. |
