Name of Assignment: Oobleck Lab
Subject: Chemistry Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. S Description of Work/Assignment: For this assignment, we were put into groups to perform a lab. We all brought materials to create Oobleck, and determine its state of matter using the scientific method. Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? I feel that the 21st Century Skill I used the most was: thinking and problem solving. My group and I used the scientific method to determine that Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? I’m most proud of the fact that our group figured out that you can roll Oobleck into a ball by applying pressure, and that when you stop applying pressure, it will collapse. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? This project helped further develop my thinking and problem solving skills by allowing me to apply my knowledge of matter and the scientific method to a real life experiment. What was most difficult about completing this task? Acquiring cornstarch was particularly difficult for our group. The member of our group who was able to buy the cornstarch was in a rush the day of the lab and forgot it, but we were able to borrow cornstarch from another group How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? If I could improve/redo this lab, I would bring more potent food coloring to dye the Oobleck. How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This project related to the scientific method which we have used previously in other classes. How can you apply this to future learning? I can continue to apply my knowledge of the scientific method in other experiments |
