Name of Assignment: HARF Project
Subject: Community Engagement
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Ford
Description of Work/Assignment: For this project, my group and I helped the Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation set up a social media account on Twitter. We went above and beyond expectations by creating an eleven page document that taught the HARF person we were working with all about what Twitter is, why Twitter is important for HARF, how to set up a profile, Twitter’s features, provided her with a list of people to follow, and also gave her other tips and tricks for the platform.
Further Elaboration: I’m very proud of myself and my group’s ability to create an in-depth document that helped educate HARF. This project really allowed me to improve my civic literacy and engagement skills by realizing just how much HARF impacts the community and how we’re able to help them continue to do that. In this project, we had to work around the fact that HARF refused to let us run the Twitter account; we had originally planned to do so for them for the rest of the school year and then teach them how to do it themselves, or allow them to hire a social media manager, but due to said roadblock, we instead opted for a document outlining how Twitter works. While it’s always possible to improve projects, given that my group and I wrote eight more pages than required on the topic, and were told that our presentation could be at a social media seminar, I don’t think it's necessary to go over project improvements. This project did allow me to utilize past presentation skills to demonstrate to the HARF employee how Twitter works.
